Von Willebrand’s Disease: how it affects expecting mothers with the disorder and the importance of knowing the specific diagnosis

Bella Limber

Abstract

Von Willebrand’s Disease is an autosomal genetic bleeding disorder which has varying severity types. This can potentially cause problems for a female patient who is pregnant or in labor because of several factors involved in that process. However, a study done spanning patients across the nation discovered that more mothers with VWD experienced certain medical complications than mothers without it. However, there are treatment options for VWD patients to alleviate symptoms such as excessive blood loss or fatigue caused by the blood loss. Even though there are a few available medications and treatment options for VWD patients, there is still plenty of research and work to be done on a more permanent solution, but informing your doctor of the diagnosis if pregnant is a step in the right direction for patients.
