Antibiotic prophylaxis and associated bacterial resistance

Matthew Youngwirth

Abstract

Since the accidental discovery of Penicillin in 1928, the quality of life for the human race has been substantially improved. However, there is much controversy currently surrounding the guidelines to control cavalier use of antibiotics. Throughout the following review of several scientific, peer reviewed articles I will address the legitimate concerns of those who beg to question the long term risk associated with the widespread overuse of antibiotics, and what possible repercussions we could face in the wake of antibiotic resistance. Not only will we discuss the action of antibiotics on the microbiologic scale, but also their effects on the global environment.
