Basic Structures of Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells

Rachel Martin

Abstract

The world and everything in it is comprised of cells. Cells can be defined as the smallest unit of life, as well as the building blocks to all living organisms. Though all cells have some similarities, there are two broad types into which they are categorized: eukaryotic and prokaryotic. All animal and plant cells are classified as eukaryotic cells, or cells that are composed of organelles surrounded by a cell membrane. The organelles that are bound by a membrane perform different functions within the cell. Prokaryotic cells are unicellular organisms that lack a membrane-bound nucleus and membrane-bound organelles, such as bacteria or archaea.
