The Enhancing Effects of Milk on Algal Growth

Abstract


Algae, of the first trophic level, are being researched for utilization as a source of biofuels. Specifically, the potential use of algae in the production of biodiesels is of interest. This study aims to determine the effects of a water pollutant on algal growth. In this case, the pollutant is milk. It was predicted that the introduction of a milk solution to an algae solution would increase algal growth, which could have the potential to improve the production of biofuels. This improvement could help to discover more ecologically and environmentally friendly alternatives to our society’s current dependence on other fuel sources. We found that the presence of a milk solution was positively correlated with increased algal growth.
