The Quality of this Water Will Leave You Going H2Oh: The Effects of Different Light Wavelengths on Algae Growth

Abstract

Photosynthetic organisms use light in order to obtain nutrients and promote growth. In our experiment we measured algae growth from three vastly different water sources under varying colors and intensities of light, leaving the sources to grow for seven days. Because algae growth is more substantial under red or blue light as these are the colors with which the photosynthetic spectrum is most active, we predict that the sources under red light will see substantially more growth than any other light source. The data collected from our experiment supports our hypothesis.
