Battle of the sexes: respiration rates of male and female cockroaches

Abstract

It is known that many factors affect rate of respiration in organisms, but this experiment was focused on discovering how gender can affect the rate of respiration. To test this, the respiration rates of a male and a female cockroach were tested in both room temperature and cold temperature. The results of the experiments indicated that while females respire at a faster rate, males eventually level out at a higher level of respiration. Because of these results, it can be inferred that females can generally withstand the colder temperatures for a longer period of time.
