Comparing the Results of the Rate of Diffusion of Different Solutes Through an Artificial Membrane
Abstract
Diffusion through a membrane changes with varying molecular sizes. Different solutions of NaCl, glucose, and starch are tested in comparison to deionized water in order to find the amount of diffusion. Though artificial cell membranes have been tested, the diffusion with artificial cell membranes should be tested further. Smaller molecules diffuse faster across a membrane than larger molecules. To test the hypothesis, three solutions (glucose, starch, and NaCl) were used to determine the diffusion of different sized molecules through an artificial membrane. This research will assist in the development of artificial cell membranes.
