Rates of NaCl Diffusion in Relation to Ion Gradient

Nicolas Smith, Kyla Overstreet, Jonah Sloup, Kaytlyn Goodwin

Abstract

The main topic of this study is the rate of diffusion across membranes. The rate of diffusion across a membrane varies in different solutions, and we are investigating why. By comparing the conductivity of the two types of water over a set period of time, we can determine if concentration gradients effect rates of diffusion. Artificial membranes were filled with NaCl solution, placed in tap and deionized water, and the rate of diffusion was measured using a conductivity probe. Our research can increase our knowledge of how living cells function.
