How Ichthyophthirius Multifiliis Affects Mate Choice in Poecilia Reticulata Guppies
Abstract
Does disease play a factor in mate choice in guppies? In this study, we observed the mating behaviors of male guppies towards two model female guppies, one with white spots to mimic the parasite Ichthyophthirius Multifiliis, and one without spots. We hypothesized that the male guppies would prefer the parasite-free model, which would be shown by him spending more time around and exhibiting more mating behaviors towards her. Based on our results, we were unable to make a clear conclusion as to whether the male guppy preferred a specific fish. We believe that further trials are needed for this study.
