Traits Male Guppies Look For When Finding a Mate

Abstract

We wanted to find out if male guppies look for specific traits in female guppies that they potentially want to mate with. In the first week we had the same male guppy and went through multiple trials with 3-D cutouts of female guppies that were different in size, shape, and color. We put two different models on opposite ends of the tank and timed how long the male guppy spent on each side. The next week we changed the method by making our own female model that was bright yellow and tested that with different male guppies. In both weeks we found that the male guppies like to spend the most time on the left side of the tank, regardless of the type of model on that side.
