Guppy Size Traits on Reproduction: Guppy Speed Dating

Abstract

Guppies’ reproductive instincts drive them to mate. We intend to show that the size of the female guppy directly influences the behavior of the male’s sexual advances. In nature the fitness of an animal directly effects if the organism produces offspring. Size is a basic sign of how fit the creature fits in the environment. We tested this by putting a fake large fish with a standard control fish and noted the amount of time spent on each side by the male fish. The results were not favorable for our hypothesis. After recording the seconds and running statistical tests we found no significant difference between the control and large fish. From this it is determined that size to very large measures does not have an impact on mating behavior of males.
