Eutrophication And Its Effect On Water Quality

Jazzmine Banks, Aron Birdsell, Justin Agan

Abstract

In our experiment we aim to find the impact that certain pollutants have on life in a body of water.  The idea of eutrophication states that the amount of nutrients in the water causes an increase in O₂ levels. In our experiment we used the pollutants of ammonia, detergent, fertilizer, and deionizer water to see the effect they have on the algae found in water. We propose that high concentrations of nutrients in a stream will cause an increase in the vegetation and an increase in O₂ levels because certain chemicals, such as fertilizer, support the growth of organisms. In our experiment we found that our hypothesis was supported.
