Comparative Research of Nutrients: Concentrations of Water in the OKC Area

Madison Ohman, Brock King, Peyton Palacios, Rachel Ritchie

Abstract

Algae populations tend to thrive in areas with a large amount of nutrients and low competition rates for them. Algae has several different types of beneficial nutrients as well as harmful substances. The amount of both is the key component of algae growth rates (Smith, Tilman, and Nekola 1999). To investigate this statement, we conducted an experiment comparing nutrient levels, their effect on biodiversity in the water, and how they changed over a years’ time. The nutrient levels of the four water sources were initially provided for the experiment. The amount of different species and individuals were counted as the water was observed under a microscope.
