Size Does MatterSize Does Matter: Guppy Sexual Selection

Rachel Norman, Alexander Mason, Robert Bowser

Abstract

Sexual selection is a major behavior that researchers study in order to investigate behavioral factors. Our hypothesis is that the male guppies prefer larger female guppies when choosing a mate because it is easier to see them in the water. Previous studies have shown that larger guppies are preferred and our results supported this. To test this we set up a fish tank and used various models of fish to see how a test guppy responded to their different sizes. In conclusion, the results were not conclusive as there was a small sample size and possible outside factors affecting our results.
