How Size Influences Male Guppy Mating Behaviors.

Abstract

Male guppies are theoretically attracted to larger female guppies as the fitness level is determined due to size. Researchers use the guppy as a means to understand what factors influence mate selection that may include color, size, length, etc. We hypothesized that male guppies are sexually attracted to females with larger bodies. In our experiment we ordered a large 3D model and a small 3D model. Five trials was done using the two models. These trials lasted for a duration of five minutes with a resting period of five minutes. Our results show that the male guppy was attracted to the larger model as the average time spent was greater.
