The Effect of Wavelengths of Light on Rate of Photosynthesis and Oxygen Production

Jocelynn Harris, Timber Kinzie, Michael Cobbs

Companies who enter the renewable plastics industry use bio-plastics which are made from renewable sources that are biodegradable under specific aerobic conditions (French, 2014). Since the companies are trying to find the correct aerobic conditions, we tested which lighting conditions plants grew the best under. Our research differs from previous work because we are trying to find the best lighting conditions for plants in order to increase the production of biodegradable products. We measured the oxygen output by the plant to determine which light was most efficient. We describe an experiment in which we placed the plant under two different wavelengths and measured the output of oxygen. We expect that finding the most efficient lighting conditions for plants will increase the amount of renewable plastics.
