Abstract

Metabolism is an important process that takes place in all animals. In ectotherms, metabolism is directly dependent upon their ambient temperature. In research for this experiment, we found conflicting results for the correlation between temperature and metabolic rate. In order to test this, we placed crickets in varying temperatures to measure their CO2 production, hypothesizing that decreasing temperatures would produce decreasing CO2 production and therefore metabolic rate. At the conclusion of our experiment we found that there is a direct correlation between temperature and metabolic rate. This supports our hypothesis, but the data suggest that there is more nuance. We hope that this paper helps resolve the conflict between varying results in other papers.
