The Effects of Ammonia Levels on Algal Growth

Thomas Hess, Caleb Jones, Dallas Hayes, Kaytlyn Goodwin

Abstract

For this experiment we set about determining the effect which ammonia levels have on algal growth. We believe that as nitrogen is added to a water sample, in the form of ammonia, the levels of dissolved oxygen in the water will initially increase due to the presence of algae because organic matter aids in algal growth. The applications of this experiment will help determine how nitrate runoff from farms and other sources effect populations of aquatic organisms by modifying the levels of dissolved oxygen the populations have available to them in the water.
