Effect of Eutrophication on Algal Growth and Amounts of Dissolved Oxygen

Nicolas Smith, Jonah Sloup, Katelyn Goodwin

Abstract

This report looks at the growth of algae as a result of excess phosphorous, and the effect the algae has on dissolved oxygen in streams and lakes. We are investigating why certain streams and lakes have less oxygen (French 2014). We are continuing on research started by the Oklahoma Attorney General, against poultry companies (Stevenson et al., 2012). Over a three week period of time, we used a Dissolved Oxygen probe, microscope, and a spectrometer to determine the relation between algae growth and dissolved oxygen rate. Our research will help environmental agencies build a case against companies spilling pollution into lakes and streams.
