Love at First Swim: What Attracts Male Guppies

Carsyn King, Lydia Jones, Sheridan Jones, Ryan W Koch

Abstract

The idea of males being more attracted to larger females alone has already been studied and supported; therefore we decided to experiment with two models to see if a group of larger females would be more appealing than just one female. We hypothesized that the male guppy will be more attracted to a group of two larger females. We ran ten trials with the control, on the right side, and the experimental group, on the left side, in a tank with one male guppy, for five minutes at a time. Our results supported our hypothesis and found that the male guppies spent more time on the experimental side.
