Effect of temperature on a mouse’s metabolic rate

Trent Caldwell, Levi Craig

Abstract

Temperature has a significant effect on metabolic rate. This effect can be seen by observing the amount of food an animal eats when it is shipped in different climates. Earlier research has supported their own hypotheses, but our research failed to do that due to outside influences. These influences suggest that maybe previous studies were also flawed. We designed an experiment to test respiration rates of mice at differing temperatures to prove or disprove our hypothesis. Our results did not support our hypothesis, as we found that mice in warmer temperatures had a higher metabolic rate (MR). However, we still feel our data is valuable because it can be used by companies to more efficiently determine how much food animals will require during shipping.
