How is Temperature Related to Metabolic Rate?: A Study of the Metabolism of Mice

Abstract

QuickPets2U.com needed to figure out a way to determine how much food an animal would need to be shipped long distances and wanted to see how temperature affected the animals. They found that mice at lower temperatures ate more and were more active but would become severely stressed above 40 Celsius (French, 2014). Mice are endothermic organisms, meaning they produce much of their own heat from their metabolism (Hoefnagels, 2015). We decided to test the metabolic rates of mice at different temperatures by measuring the amount of CO2 produced at 13°C, at room temperature 23.1°C, and at 28°C. Those results were recorded using Logger Pro software with the temperature probe and CO2 monitor.
