Diffusion of NaCl Solution Through a Semi-Permeable Membrane at Different Temperatures

Abstract

Diffusion through a semi-permeable membrane varies under different environmental situations (Abuin et al., 2012). We tested to see if changes in the temperature affect the rates of diffusion of NaCl by measuring the conductivity of a room temperature NaCl solution and compared it to the conductivity of a heated NaCl solution as it diffused through dialysis tubing. Testing how artificial membranes work will help scientists develop a way to mass produce artificial cell membranes, for use in synthetic biology projects, and contribute to the study to design and develop biological devices and systems for useful application (French, 2014).
