Red Light District: The Effect of Red Light on the Oxygen Output of a Plant

Abstract


Under certain light conditions, plants have a higher rate of photosynthesis than in others. Wavelength of light is most likely what affects the rate of photosynthesis. Previous work has failed to address how red and green wavelengths affect the rate of photosynthesis with a Dracaena godseffianaplant. We tackled this issue by conducting a series of tests. We performed a chromatography test, measured the absorption spectrum of a leaf with a spectrometer, and measured the rate of oxygen released from the plant. This research is relevant for understanding the release of oxygen from plants, which is necessary for all human and animal life.
